Nick Carley

Nick Carley, Managing Director

I'm an energetic entrepreneur and consultant founding and running businesses since my early thirties. I set up Alterline with Ben Hickman nearly 10 years’ ago based on the clear principle that the power of insight and intelligence is best realised when it is focused on business objectives and is coupled with actionable recommendations. I love discussing with clients what makes their organisation tick, understanding and analysing what’s going on, thinking about what will work best for them, gathering and using evidence to inform these discussions, and coming up with a plan – to deliver smart, bold, innovative outcomes.

Outside of work: I am chair of the board at the Minster Centre, one of the UK’s leading training institutions for counsellors and psychotherapists. I’m a late returner to the joys of cycling and a committed pursuant of PRs on Strava. I love the simple pleasures of food, wine and coffee and still have much of my early zeal and passion about putting the world to rights.

I love a challenge and thrive on helping clients to solve their big, strategic problems – it’s what Nick and I set up Alterline to do. I've always worked in insight agencies and believe in the power of creative, smart market research and consultancy. I spend a lot of my time getting to know our clients, their organisations and their aspirations. Working with our team I help senior managers to understand their customers' lives, attitudes and experiences, translating that understanding into ideas, strategies and actions that can make a difference.

Outside of work: I'm kept on my toes by three young children and enjoy sharing in everything the world has to offer them, from ball pools to sailing, and from finger paints to climbing mountains.

Damian Miller

Damian Miller, Research Director

I have over 17 years market research experience, spending over eight of those in customer experience research. I joined Alterline because I was impressed with the work that was being done, the people I met and the opportunity to work in a different sector on projects that could make a genuine difference. As the Research director I head up our research team, provide consultative support to our projects to ensure that research aims are realised and that actionable recommendations provide valuable intelligence for our clients.

Outside of work I enjoy travelling and exploring new cultures (when I can) and I have a passion for whisky…all whisky.

Beth Carley

Beth Carley, Head of Research Impact

My background is in academic research, with an MSc and a PhD in social research, statistics and social policy from the University of Manchester. My postgraduate research employed a mixed-method approach to examine the outcomes of community empowerment policy in deprived neighbourhoods. My role as a research consultant at Alterline involves distilling the breadth of research intelligence we gather for clients into clear and concrete messages, publications, strategies and actions. This can be a formidable task, but one that is incredibly rewarding – great research speaks truths with profound reach, and can be a vehicle for growth and progress like no other.

Outside of work: I am mostly to found with a book in my hand – from science fiction through to philosophy and psychotherapy. I am a trainee psychotherapist combining academic study and experiential learning with face-to-face client work. I try to do yoga as often as I can and enjoy running slightly less often. My guilty pleasure is EastEnders.

Laura Hotchkiss

Laura Hotchkiss, Research Manager

Since my early days as a researcher I have been interested in all things statistical. I love projects that really help the client see their audience in a new light bringing the needs and personalities of different groups to life to inform new strategies and help develop services. My first role in research involved running consumer insight communities and this, together with my background in psychology and MRS advanced certificate research practice was the perfect foundation for joining Alterline. As a research manager I am responsible for the oversight of complete projects from design to reporting. I love sharing my passion for research and supporting other members of the team.

Outside of work: I enjoy staying active by taking long walks with my chocolate labrador and getting my friends to taste my homemade chocolates.

Zara Lawson

Zara Lawson, Research Manager

I enjoy nothing more than getting to the bottom of what people think, understanding why they behave the way they do and how this translates into their patient journeys and experiences. I have worked on a huge variety of projects from running quarterly trackers for a healthcare mutual to intense ethnographic work spending hours and days with patients and their families to know what it is like to live with a particular condition. Over my years at Alterline I have been involved in every part of the research process as well as completing my research Master’s. I love working with everyone at Alterline and getting stuck into the great variety of new and exciting projects that come through the door.

Outside of work: I enjoy losing myself in a good puzzle, collecting random facts and world cinema.
